Our Permaculture Design Certificate Course (PDC) was originally developed by Bill Mollison, co-founder of Permaculture, to teach the principles and foundations of sustainable design.  All PDC courses offered throughout the world must follow the same format (see PDC Outline) to assure that the integrity of the certification process is upheld.

Both the Introduction to Permaculture course and the full Permaculture Design Course follow the official guidelines for teaching Permaculture as directed by Bill Mollison.

The PDC Course includes tutoring and support from professional Permaculture designers and teachers, and the curriculum follows the topics in Mollison’s book, Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual, the foundation text of Permaculture Design.

Students completing the Permaculture Education Center PDC Course receive an official, internationally-recognized, numbered, and recorded PDC Certificate signed by Dr. Alan Enzo and other highly-qualified instructors from the Permaculture Education Center.

Our courses are eligible for university course credits and continuing education credits in related disciplines (architecture, landscape architecture, sustainable agriculture, etc.), and are also eligible for Veterans VA and active military educational reimbursement benefits.  The PDC Course has been approved for government-sponsored vocational training funds in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and USA.

Our instructors are professional, patient, and supportive, and are focused on the student’s needs.

Online students study at their own pace.  Instructors carefully monitor progress and are available to assist students via email and phone when needed.  The courses are delivered via downloads in pdf format. Students will receive download instructions for the course materials after payment is made. There are no homework assignments for the Introduction to Permaculture Course.  Students taking the online Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course will submit homework assignments and work with instructors via email.

Who Takes the Online PDC?

In 1994, Bill Mollison realized that there was a great need for an online PDC course.

“The fact is that not everyone can afford to take 15-20 days off from work, pay for travel, food and lodging, and then pay $1,500.00 or more for an on-site PDC course.”

In addition to the economic and time barriers to attending an on-site Permaculture course, the Permaculture community also realizes that different people learn in different ways.  Some would rather study from the comfort of home than travel, camp outdoors and listen to days of lectures.  Some learn better with the traditional teacher-student model (classroom, lectures, etc.), and some prefer the convenience of the online learning platform.

What kind of people take a Permaculture Design Certificate Course online?

  • University student teams, led by a professor.
  • Aid workers, Emergency Management professionals, and missionaries (in-country or preparing to go), who want to take the PDC course together as a group.
  • People who want to learn at their own pace.
  • Those who work long hours or have young children at home.
  • Those who prefer the online learning format to sit through days of lectures.
  • People who may already have a PDC from their local Permaculture group, but want to learn new methods and techniques from different teachers.
  • People who live in remote parts of the world.
  • People who don’t have the money or time required to attend an on-site PDC course.

Our online PDC course is designed for those who want to digest the material at their own pace, and receive support and feedback from teachers experienced in Permaculture Design and other related disciplines.

Graduates of Permaculture Design Courses:

Today, Permaculture work is being carried out in over 130 countries by thousands of Permaculture design course graduates. PDC Graduates are typically classified as Permaculture "Trainees" until they have at least 2 years of experience in Permaculture Design-related work.

Can I teach or consult after receiving my PDC?

PDC graduates are absolutely encouraged to start teaching and consulting with others after receiving their PDC certification (this question was addressed fully by Bill Mollison in 2005). However, it is highly recommended that if the graduate does not have 2+ years of prior related experience, that they spend their first 2 years co-teaching and consulting along with other qualified teachers before using the terms "Permaculture Design Consultant" or "Permaculture Design Teacher/Instructor".

Completion of the official 72-hour PDC course allows the graduate to legally use the term "Permaculture" in their business and other activities.

“After having discovered my life's passion in Permaculture, there was the question of how to pursue it. I am so fortunate to have found the online PDC course, which allowed me to become a certified Permaculture Designer at my own pace. As a busy mom of young children, it was the perfect solution. The PermacultureEducation.com PDC course material condensed a lot of information that led me to new paths of understanding, encouraging me to look further and deeper into the subject matter. I learned to read the land, as it were, in the language that it spoke, and in a way that combined ancient, indigenous wisdom with the valuable resources offered by the sciences. I hope to use this new literacy in the service of the Creator, of life itself, as part of a community that strives to make the world a better place through designing landscapes that work symbiotically, providing abundance for all of its inhabitants. I am deeply grateful for the attentiveness and encouragement of my teachers who responded to each installment of homework with personal concern, guidance and praise. Their personal approach, I believe, is the primary ingredient that makes for the highest quality Permaculture Design education alongside a very good curriculum, making it worth every penny.”

Sara Harding

“I was looking for a high-quality permaculture design course to take that would broaden my horizons but would fit with my non-traditional schedule. The online PDC offered by Dr. Enzo and the team at PermacultureEducation.com was exactly what I was looking for! The lessons were challenging and informative, not to mention well written, and I found myself immersed in the resources right away. The feedback from the instructors was quick and informative, helping me see areas I might want to concentrate on while sharing in the nuances of my particular site. My favorite aspect of this course was the collaborative feel from the instructors. They were always available with suggestions and were genuinely as excited about designing my site as I was. I would highly recommend this course and PermacultureEducation.com to anyone seeking a high-quality PDC course with maximum flexibility.”

Derek Kirbow, Ph.D., M.A.

“I have a love and passion for my newly found science of permaculture. I desperately wanted to take a PDC but with a full-time job, building a homestead, and a brand new baby, I just could not spare 10-14 days in a row. After reading all the books I could find, I heard podcast interviews with Dr. Enzo and Jessica Enzo and liked their straight forward approach. Honestly, I remain a little uncomfortable with some of the more qualitative, political, emotive social justice aspects of some peoples' permaculture courses. I wanted to learn the real science and methods. That is exactly what the PermacultureEducation.com online PDC supplied. The email exchanges were challenging and thought-provoking and gave me confidence in my own understanding to practically try the concepts learned. The time flexibility and low cost from PermacultureEducation.com made getting a PDC possible for me.”

Kevin Kilgore

“What impresses me most about this PDC is the quality of the instructors. The support was superb! It was obvious from first contact - the wealth of knowledge that they have. Anyone can go out and buy one of Mollison's manuals, but knowledgeable insight offered in layman's terms (when necessary) has been invaluable to me as a beginning Permaculturist. There was always just enough input supplied from the instructors to help me connect-the-dots on my own while encouraging my creativity. Also, all of the responses from the instructors were given in a constructive, build-you-up manner. This is the best online class I have taken to date and would recommend it to anyone!”
